Hardwood Orangeries – Rural Timber Windows
Orangeries were first seen in the 17th century built for the purpose of growing citrus trees in a protected environment, shielding the trees from the potentially harmful weather over the winter months.
Orangeries soon developed into somewhat of a status symbol, becoming a “must have” addition within the grounds of the wealthier homes. As such, orangery designs became a fashion statement becoming more and more grandeur in their appearance, with the use of classical architectural and elaborate materials.
Today, Orangeries have made somewhat of a resurgence, still maintaining a degree of grandeur and finesse in their construction and style, providing an impressive alternative to a modern conservatory
Differences between Orangeries and Conservatories
Conservatories are generally seen as an extension to a home, reflecting the same design features and colour schemes of the house, with the purpose of adding an additional room to the property with minimal brickwork and predominantly constructed of glass.
Orangeries on the other hand, take this concept of creating additional living space to a totally different level, maintaining that additional touch of elegance, style and luxury. It’s design may differ from the interior and exterior of the house, following the more classical style, through the use of bold colonnades, wide glazed elements between large brickwork or hardwood timber and shallow roof pitches, all combined with scale and proportion to create a much grander extension to your home than any conservatory could achieve.
An Orangery designed for you
Whilst orangeries by their very nature tend to be extravagant and luxurious, Rural Timber is mindful of designing orangeries that are also sympathetic to existing homes, picking up and combining styles and designs from the original building in order to produce a classic orangery design that will blend seamlessly with your home
