One of our most recent jobs was to undertake a project in the delightful village of Broadway in the Cotswolds. With our help and expertise, the owners were looking to make some improvements to their traditional stone cottage in keeping with the original look of the property. We discussed what they wanted to achieve and came up with some designs. As the cottage was 250 years old we wanted to make sure the work undertaken made improvements whilst not altering the overall look or feel of the property.
The key area of the work was to ensure there was an increase in natural light into the cottage. To do this we designed and fitted 3 sets of Hardwood bi-fold doors. Fitting them at the rear of the property had the added advantage of opening up the home to the magnificent views of the Cotswolds. This style of door is of the highest standard of energy efficiency and will help to maintain the room temperature during the cold winter months. The glass used within the double glazed hardwood doors is manufactured by PLANITHERM, a product which helps to regulate heat within the home and can actively help homeowners to save money on their energy bills.
Bi-fold doors are clearly one of the best ways of making a room an extension of the world outside, a particular benefit when the weather is brighter. In this case, the rolling hills of the Cotswolds have become our client’s very own garden in the spring and summer months.
Typically, Bi-fold doors have always been manufactured using Oak, Sapele or Mahogany, but these timbers can have a tendency to expand and contract depending on the time of year and atmospheric moisture. In this particular case we used Accoya Timber. This timber has been through a process that makes it highly stable and incredibly durable lasting – in fact it can last at least 50 years above ground and 25 years in-ground or in freshwater contact. Accoya wood also forms an effective barrier against mould and insect attack as it is indigestible for microorganisms and insects and therefore more durable to wood-destroying fungi. It is also virtually rot-proof.
In addition, all remaining windows and external doors in the cottage were updated, giving an extra element of security but most importantly, increasing the levels of energy efficiency for the house. With a traditional stone cottage it is important to focus on keeping the original look by blending traditional windows and doors with the stonework.
